ACHOO^® Screens

'Achoo' is a synonym of 'sneeze'. Achoo is photic sneeze reflex, medically known as: ‘Autosomal Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst’, which is abbreviated to ‘ACHOO’.

'Achoo Screen' is semantically similar to the term 'Sneeze Screen' and is a brand trademark of XL Displays Ltd for a range of Protective Screens, Sneeze Screens, Sneeze Guard, glass screens and hygiene solutions, launched in May 2020 in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Due to its now common use in the English language, ’Sneeze Screens’ is a descriptor for a screen manufactured from either Perspex, acrylic, plastic material or glass that is designed to protect people from airborne transmission of viruses such as Coronavirus (COVID-19). Screens can be either office desk mounted, free standing, attached to a counter or reception desk, or be on castor wheels so they are mobile and moveable.

Barrier screens are essential for when strict social distancing is not possible. The World Health Organisation advises to: Use physical barriers to reduce exposure to the COVID-19 virus, such as glass or plastic windows.

Illnesses like Coronavirus (as well as seasonal flu, norovirus and common colds) are spread through respiratory droplets expelled by an infectious person (whether symptomatic or asymptomatic). These droplets can travel up to 2m in the air, which is why we are asked to remain socially distanced from one another. In working environments, sneeze screens form a transparent barrier between people, blocking the respiratory droplets from transmitting to other people. These screens can then be easily wiped down and sanitised to remove all traces of the virus.

Our range of premium ACHOO® social distancing sneeze screens are made from either Perspex® acrylic or thermally toughened safety glass.

Acrylic Perspex® is a man-made plastic that is produced in large sheets and then laser cut to the required dimensions. It is lightweight, strong and relatively inexpensive, making it our most popular choice as a base material for social distancing screens. Safety glass, or ‘tempered’ glass is glass that has undergone an intense process of firing in high heat before being cooled rapidly to create a finished product 4-5 times stronger than normal glass.

We sell many different shapes and sizes of social distancing screens, almost all are available in high-quality transparent Perspex®. Our frameless screens are manufactured from acrylic Perspex® that’s 5mm-8mm thick depending on the height and design of the individual screen. For our framed divider screens, we use anodised aluminium with 3mm-thick Perspex® secured with silicone. (Or 4mm-thick safety glass, if you choose that option). The aluminium we use for our frames is non-porous, making it easy to keep clean and sanitised in a socially distanced environment.
